Halloween Night

Come join the Whaley House and the Old Town San Diego community in celebrating its haunted present with a ritual from the past honoring the Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition. The celebration is not a mournful one; the holiday is spent in celebration with friends and family, as a time to offer hospitality to the spirits, and to honor and remember loved ones.

More than thirty local businesses, museums, and community organizations will create traditional Mexican altars and ofrendas (offerings to the dead). Restaurants will offer a variety of specialties and specialty drinks. Music, traditional poetry readings and more will accompany the celebration.

On November 1 at 8pm, you are invited to join a candlelight procession from the Whaley House Museum to El Campo Santo Cemetery. There, among the gravesites of some of Old Town's earliest families, you may leave offerings of your own in honor of your lost loved ones.

To learn more about the traditions and to find out about all the special performances, free offerings and specialty menus too, please check out the activities, poetry, history of the tradition, and more on Facebook.

You may visit all the Old Town altars using a free self-guided tour map, downloadable HERE. (1-page pdf) Print your own map and come join the celebration!
